rockstar playtesters hadn't seen that jewelry store robbery in months
MikeShowSha's preview story keeps rattling around my head. He was at Rockstar North for one of those exclusive looks and got to watch Rob Nelson play for a bit. During that session a random encounter popped up where two female robbers tripped an alarm inside a jewelry store and ended up trapped in there. Nothing crazy on its own, but apparently the Rockstar staff watching said they hadn't seen that exact scenario come up in months of playtesting. Months.
That's the part I can't stop thinking about. RDR2 had 114 random encounters and it felt like a lot on paper, but by the second or third playthrough you'd seen basically all of them. Offer a ride, pull a guy out of a bear trap, get the snake bite guy some medicine. Cool moments the first time, but they repeat so much that the world starts feeling scripted instead of alive. I always wanted more variety and I know I wasn't alone.
If Rockstar's own testers can go months without seeing a specific encounter, that suggests the pool is way deeper than anything they've done before. Maybe hundreds of these things. Maybe closer to a thousand if the speculation is right. That would make every playthrough feel genuinely different, which is exactly what they've said they're aiming for with replayability. A jewelry store robbery gone wrong might only happen for one player out of a hundred, and someone else gets a totally different chain of events in the same spot.
I'm trying not to overhype myself off one anecdote, but this is the kind of detail that makes the wait feel worth it. If the random encounter system is that deep, the world might actually stay surprising for years instead of a couple weeks.
Do you think we'll get enough variety to keep replays feeling fresh, or will it still settle into patterns after a while?
