What we've been playing - "Sniffing out the warehouses on Prawn Island"

Eurogamer ran their usual what-we've-been-playing piece this week and buried in it is a bit about Dom going back to the original Vice City. The headline quote is him sniffing out warehouses on Prawn Island, which is such a specific, perfect way to describe how that game makes you poke around every alley. The rest of the column is the usual mix: Marie on a Zelda, Kelsey on weird cards, Connor back in WoW probably forever, and the host on some RPG.

Nothing in there is news, obviously. No GTA 6 tidbits, no release date chatter. Just a writer revisiting the 80s version while the rest of us sit here waiting for November 19.

Still, the Prawn Island line got me. That's the thing about the old games. They're small by today's standards and the map is basically a couple of islands with a bridge, but the way it pulls you into random corners is real. You go looking for a warehouse because a mission told you to, and then you're just wandering. I did the same thing with the mall back in the day, no objective, just driving around.

And it's hard not to read it as a warmup. Leonida is Vice City plus the Keys, Grassrivers, Mount Kalaga, Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia. If a stripped-down version of the city still eats hours, the bigger one is going to be a problem for my free time. I keep telling myself I'll mainline the story and then do side stuff, and I know that's a lie.

Anyone else doing a Vice City replay before launch, or are you saving the appetite for the real thing?
