GTA V was a masterpiece but 13 years of it has drained the soul out of the series
I grew up on this series. GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas — each one had its own vibe, its own world. I spent more time just driving around, testing the limits, than actually doing missions. Vice City and San Andreas were the only ones I finished. The rest I just lived in.
Then IV dropped and it felt like stepping into a real, breathing city. The story had weight, moral ambiguity, actual depth. I still think IV is the peak of the franchise.
When the first GTA V trailer hit I was hyped but confused. I thought we were getting three cities again, like a modern San Andreas. Turned out it was just Los Santos, but when the game came out I was hooked. Three protagonists, the Los Santos vibe, the secrets — UFOs, ghosts, the Chiliad mystery. That era was magic. I replayed the story three or four times on PS3 alone. Then the PS4 version with first person got me again. Then PC. And after that, radio silence.
I tried GTA Online a bunch of times. It never clicked. The missions are repetitive, there's no real narrative, and it just feels like a soulless grindfest. That's where the magic died for me.
Between 2005 and 2013, I got to experience four completely different worlds. The cold, gritty Liberty City with Claude. The neon-drenched 80s Vice City. The vast, chaotic state of San Andreas with CJ. And the raw, realistic NYC of GTA IV. Each one felt like a new chapter. Then came GTA V. It was amazing, don't get me wrong. But by 2015 I already knew every street, every alley, every mountain. The world stopped surprising me. And Rockstar just stopped moving forward.
Thirteen years. And what did we get? A couple of online DLCs, a new island, heists, some flying bikes and cars. That's it. No single player expansion. No new city. No new story. I don't hate GTA V. It's a great game. But it killed the cycle that made Rockstar special. The cycle of stepping into a new world every few years.
I'm cautiously hyped for GTA VI. Not because I expect perfection, but because I desperately want to feel that wonder again. That curiosity. That feeling of being a kid, lost in a city I've never seen before. Vice City, the Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn — a whole new state to explore. Lucia and Jason, a fresh story. I just hope it brings back that spark.
Anyone else feel like the long wait has made them numb to the hype? Or are you still counting the days like it's 2012?

I feel same way about V. I know every corner of Los Santos, it's like driving in my own neighborhood now. But Leonida looks fresh. The Keys and Grassrivers remind me of places here in Brazil. I'm ready to get lost again. November cannot come fast enough.
