Rockstar says people seeking GTA 6 updates have led to hackers blackmailing over leaks and drones being used to spy on devs

The lengths some people go to for a crumb of GTA 6 news are getting genuinely scary. GamesRadar+ has a piece up about Rockstar addressing the situation, and it's grim.

Apparently the constant demand for updates has pushed some folks way over the line. Rockstar says hackers have been blackmailing people over leaks, and there have been drones used to spy on devs. Actual drones. Flying over studios or wherever the team is working, trying to catch a glimpse of something.

I get that the wait since the extended look has been rough. November 19 still feels far off, and every little detail gets dissected to death. But blackmail and drones are harassment, plain and simple.

Rockstar didn't go into specifics about what was taken or who was targeted, which is probably for the best. The only real detail in the report is that improved security measures have since been implemented. Makes sense. If people are flying drones at your office, you're going to lock things down.

It also makes me wonder how much of the silence from Rockstar is just normal marketing strategy and how much is them having to protect their people. We've all joked about Rockstar being secretive, but this is a different level. The studio has always played things close to the chest, and now they have to deal with actual security threats on top of the usual hype cycle.

I'm not going to pretend I haven't refreshed this forum a hundred times hoping for a new screenshot or a radio station list. But there's a line, and some people blew right past it a long time ago. Drones over a dev's house or office is stalker behavior, full stop.

What do you all think is driving this? Is it just the long wait, or has the GTA community always had a segment that takes things too far?

Worth noting the timeline. Trailer 1 (Dec 2023) to Trailer 2 (May 2025) was roughly 17 months of silence, and that's the window where this reportedly escalated. I count frames in trailers and catalog vehicles per shot. At no point did flying a drone at the building seem like a data-gathering method. The one concrete detail in the piece: improved security measures, implemented after the fact. Everything else is unspecified.

drones is unhinged. in RP we deal with stream snipers and metagamers and thats already exhausting, but those losers stay in game. flying hardware over a devs office is a whole different breed of obsessed. cant imagine trying to build a world while some guy hovers outside your window. no screenshot is worth that

The drone part tracks with LA logic, sadly. Paparazzi have been renting helicopters to peek over studio walls for decades, so someone was always going to point that energy at a dev team. Difference is a movie star signed up for fame. The person animating Lucia's walk cycle didn't. Glad they tightened security, but it's bleak that it got this far first.
