'It would have been insanity to take no action' - Fiery opening statements reveal Rockstar's culture of secrecy as tribunal over sacked GTA 6 employees begins

So the final employment tribunal hearing kicked off and it sounds like neither side is holding back. Rockstar and the IWGB both came out swinging in their opening statements. The whole thing goes back to when 31 people at Rockstar North got let go almost a year ago, and the union has been calling it union busting ever since.

Rockstar's side apparently used a line like "it would have been insanity to take no action" which tells you how they're framing this. They're not treating it as a minor HR thing, they're going hard on the idea that they had to do something. The article mentions a culture of secrecy coming up too, which is not exactly news to anyone who's followed this studio for more than five minutes.

I know a lot of people here only care about the game itself, but this stuff matters for how GTA 6 actually got made. If the devs were working under that kind of pressure, it probably shaped the final product in ways we'll never see on a credits screen. And with the game two months out, the timing of this hearing is wild. Rockstar's trying to keep the hype train rolling while also fighting a labor case in public.

What gets me is how little we still know about why those 31 people were actually fired. The union says one thing, Rockstar says another, and the tribunal is where it all gets laid out. I'm not taking sides until more of the actual testimony comes out, but the opening statements alone sound messy.

Anyone else following this or is it just me refreshing for trailer 3 news?

That "insanity to take no action" line is doing a lot of work. It's the kind of phrasing you workshop with lawyers for weeks. Sounds decisive while saying nothing about what the actual infraction was.

The secrecy angle cuts both ways though. Every big studio compartmentalizes, same way you don't give the getaway driver the vault blueprints. Need-to-know keeps a project intact. But if 31 people got clipped over union talk, that's not protecting a product, that's protecting leverage over your own crew.

Timing's the part I keep coming back to. Two months from launch you want zero headlines that aren't trailers. Instead they're arguing labor law in public with the union trading quotes. Someone at Take-Two is having a deeply unpleasant week.

I've run Cayo setups with looser NDAs than this studio. 31 salaries is rounding error next to GTA Online's monthly take, so the secrecy sure isn't about money.
