Saw this on Insider Gaming. New court docs have Rockstar comparing their security to Apple and Coca-Cola, and former devs are calling the studio pathologically obsessed with GTA secrecy.

I get why they're paranoid after all the leak and hacker stuff, but comparing yourself to Coca-Cola's secret formula is a bit much. Apple I can see, they're famous for product secrecy. But Coca-Cola is a drink. GTA 6 is a game that's had two trailers and an extended look. The cat's kind of out of the bag on a lot of it.

What gets me is Rockstar has always been like this. They drop a trailer every couple years and then go silent for months. The extended look in August was great, but we're two months from launch and they're still treating basic info like state secrets. I'm not saying they should spoil the story, but stuff like PC version, online details, even the map size, it's all still vague. And now court docs are showing they compare their security to companies that protect trade secrets worth billions.

The article mentions former devs saying it's pathological, which makes me think the secrecy runs deep in the studio culture. Like even internal teams don't know what other teams are doing. That can't be healthy for development.

Curious what everyone thinks. Is Rockstar's secrecy justified at this point, or is it just making the wait more annoying?

The compartmentalization bit is what gets me. If teams really can't see what other teams are building, I wonder how QA even functions on systemic stuff. Physics and AI interactions kind of need the whole sandbox running to break properly. Maybe there's a small trusted test group with full access, but siloed playtesting seems like it'd miss exactly the weird edge cases that make these games fun to poke at.

Coca-Cola guards a recipe. Rockstar's guarding a game we've already seen twice plus an extended look. Bit of a reach.

The silo point above is the real cost though. You can't tune a car if the suspension guy never talks to the engine guy. Same energy. And two months out with no PC word, c'mon. That secrecy is just leaving money PARKED.
