Wait, ID Checks in GTA Online?

So Tez2 spotted some interesting code buried in GTA Online — looks like Rockstar is cooking up an age verification system. The code references "Verify Age / No Access", which is pretty self-explanatory: either you prove you're old enough, or you're locked out of certain stuff.

Why Now?

This is almost certainly tied to UK law. The UK has been pushing hard on age verification requirements for online games, especially ones with gambling-adjacent mechanics and in-game purchases. Rockstar's probably getting ahead of the regulations before they're forced into a corner.

What Could Get Gated?

Based on what's been found, the features most likely to require verification include:

  • The Diamond Casino — this one's obvious, given the gambling mechanics
  • In-game chat — voice and text could fall under communication restrictions
  • The store and Snapmatic — purchasing and sharing content could be affected

So basically, a huge chunk of what makes GTA Online... GTA Online.

The Bigger Picture

This isn't just a GTA thing. If this rolls out and sticks, it sets a precedent for the entire gaming industry. Other publishers will be watching closely to see how Rockstar handles the implementation — and how players react.

Look, nobody loves handing over ID to play a game, but the writing's been on the wall for a while with how legislation's been trending. The real question is how intrusive this process will be and whether it'll push casual players away.

How do you think this will actually work in practice — and will it change your GTA Online habits at all?

Man, if they gate voice chat behind ID verification, that's cruise nights and car meets dead in the water. Half the fun is calling out runs, talking trash at the docks, coordinating drift trains. Text only car meets? That's soulless.

Also kind of funny they're worried about the Casino when the real crime is how many people out there running stock engine swaps on 400k builds. Verify whether these people actually know how to tune first, Rockstar.
