Don’t Care About GTA 6’s Romance System? Don’t Use It, Dev Says

Caught the new interview with Rob Nelson and he basically said the romance system in GTA 6 is there if you want it, but nobody's forcing you. If you're not into the whole Jason and Lucia as a couple thing, just don't engage with it. Simple as that.

He mentioned you can hold hands, go to the zoo, take a walk on the beach, stuff like that. But if you skip all that, you might miss out on some other stuff. He wouldn't say what exactly, said he doesn't want to spoil anything. But he did say it adds a compelling element and it's one of the reasons they wanted to do this kind of story in the first place, because it's completely different for GTA.

What got me is he said they didn't originally plan for players to feel protective of Jason and Lucia as a unit. It just kind of happened as they were making it. He said whether you're getting in trouble, running from cops, getting in a car, or waiting for the other one, playing as them together feels cool. Like you're taking care of them, if that's your thing.

There's also a relationship management side. You have to respond to texts and actually make an effort, like a real relationship. And your actions have meaning in terms of how you treat your partner or how violent you are. That's new for GTA, apparently. He compared the story to Bonnie and Clyde, which we already knew, but it's interesting to hear him talk about it like that.

I'm honestly fine with this. I'll probably mess around with the romance stuff on a second playthrough, but for the first run I just want to see the story and cause chaos. The fact that Rockstar is making it optional instead of forcing a relationship down your throat is the right call. Some people are going to hate it, some are going to love it, but at least we get to choose.
