Phantom Liberty did 5 million units at $30. That's $150M, maybe $200M if you're generous with deluxe upgrades. Shadow of the Erdtree sold 5M in three days, probably $200M+ by now. Those are real numbers. But GTA Online pulled $500M+ in 2020 alone. In a pandemic year. With no major content drop. Just Shark Cards and existing loops.

Rockstar's incentive structure hasn't changed. A story DLC is a one-time $60 purchase from maybe 20-30% of the install base. GTA V sold 200M copies. If 30% bought a $40 expansion, that's $2.4B. Sounds huge. But GTA Online has made over $8B in microtransactions since 2013. Recurring. Predictable. No new voice acting or mo-cap needed after the initial asset dump.

The break-even on a single-player expansion is brutal when your alternative is printing $1.2B a year from a live service that costs a fraction to maintain. Phantom Liberty took 3 years. For $150M. GTA Online makes that in a quarter. The math hasn't changed. It's gotten worse.

The math is solid. Single-player DLC is a cold case. Rockstar will funnel resources into GTA Online and whatever live-service hooks they bolt onto GTA 6. I'd rather see that budget go to pursuit AI and tactical dispatch tiers. Give me actual felony stop procedures and interlocking jurisdictions. Story content doesn't move the needle on gameplay mechanics.
